Kelly Hoppen: a positive force

The grand dame of interior design reveals the secrets to business success — and a perfect work/life balance

Tell Wildflower readers about the Kelly Hoppen design aesthetic…

The Kelly Hoppen aesthetic is classic, timeless, and chic. My style has evolved over time, but my core East-Meets-West design principles stay the same — and I will always champion taupe! I believe in never being driven by trends, instead believing in classic, luxurious design that stands the test of time.

What pushes you to keep going, keep creating and keep moving your business forward?

Passion — I truly believe that you can always do more. There is no limit to what we can achieve if we put our minds to it.

With so many projects on the go, are you still hands-on with the design process?

Each project presents a unique challenge; for someone who has been in the business for more than 40 years, I always love exploring new areas of design. I am involved in every project I take on, but I’m so lucky to have a team of extremely talented and trusted designers who completely understand my vision.

You are also involved in various mentoring schemes — how do you help other start-ups?

I try to offer advice as much as I can — this helps me channel everything I’ve learned over the years and pass the knowledge on to young creatives all around the world. I have a real desire to encourage the next generation of entrepreneurs; there is so much fresh talent emerging and it is important to offer guidance.

You do a lot of charity work, including working with Future Dreams, the Great Britain campaign and The Prince’s Trust. Why is it important to make time for things like this?

I’m very fortunate to be in a position where I can use my platform to raise awareness for things like The Prince’s Trust, the Great Britain campaign, Cool Earth, or Future Dreams, so I do this as much as I can.

How do you manage your work/life balance?

Work/life balance is about what works for you as an individual. I make sure to train every morning as it keeps me centred and focused. I also always make time for my loved ones as they’re the most important people in my life.

What is the secret to your own personal happiness?

I have a beautiful family and wonderful friends and have built and continue to build a business that I am very proud of.
